In this discussion Andrew Liveris AO, former Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Dow Chemical Company and the former Executive Chairman of DowDuPont, and Liveris Academy Scholar Javan McGuckin discuss what makes leaders effective, the current challenges leaders are facing, and how young leaders can rise to these challenges and promote social responsibility.
They talk about the need for a new class of leaders and enterprises, Andrew’s own leadership development journey, and the challenges facing a post-COVID world.

Andrew N. Liveris, AO
Andrew is the former Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Dow Chemical Company and the former Executive Chairman of DowDuPont.
With over forty years of global leadership experience at The Dow Chemical Company, his career included roles in manufacturing, engineering, sales, marketing, and business and general management around the world.
Andrew is currently a director at IBM, Saudi Aramco, Worley, Lucid Motors (Chairman) and NOVONIX. He is on the advisory board of Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, Teneo and NEOM. He is Chairman of the Blackrock Long Term Capital and a special advisor to the Public Investment Fund (PIF) and the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia.
He earned a bachelor’s degree (first-class honours) in chemical engineering from the University of Queensland and was awarded the University Medal for that year. In 2005 he was awarded an honorary doctorate in science by his alma mater as well as being named Alumnus of the Year.
Andrew was appointed Officer of the Order of Australia for his services to international business in 2014.

Javan is currently completing a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) / Master of Engineering at UQ, and plans to major in the field of chemical engineering.
He was the recipient of a University of Queensland Young Achievers Scholarship in Year 10, and was awarded a Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority Distinguished Academic Achiever Award in late 2018 for his Year 12 studies.
As a Liveris Scholar, Javan looks forward to exploring his passion for sustainability, and developing his knowledge of materials engineering in order to make impactful changes for the betterment of others.
