University of Queensland (UQ) star alumnus, Andrew N. Liveris AO, has returned to Brisbane this week to welcome the newest members of the Liveris Academy for Innovation and Leadership.

At a formal dinner held at UQ’s Customs House, UQ Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Peter Høj AC thanked Andrew Liveris and his wife Paula for their historic gift to the University, and congratulated the Academy’s inaugural Director, Professor Peta Ashworth and recipients of the Andrew N. Liveris Academy Undergraduate Scholarships.

The scholarships were created through the generous donation a $13.5m by Andrew Liveris and his wife Paula, which will support outstanding students to become effective and creative leaders with the capacity to contribute to a sustainable future.

UQ Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Peter Høj AC said the University was delighted to offer the scholarships to those with a future vision of sustainability and a global mindset. The five most recent scholarship recipients - Simeon Gover, Thomas Heath, Megan Jones, Esandi Kalugalage, and Amber Spurway - are the second cohort to join the Academy.

Newly appointed Director of the Academy, Professor Peta Ashworth OAM said she was excited to support the Academy’s talented Scholars.

“Our Liveris Scholars will benefit from a unique student experience including leadership training, targeted professional practice placements, as well as mentoring from global leaders representing industry, entrepreneurship and policy/humanitarian fields.”

“I look forward to helping our Scholars build a more sustainable future, and creating opportunities for organisations and individuals globally to connect with some of our brightest young minds.”

Mr Liveris met with Professor Ashworth at UQ St Lucia this week to discuss the future of the Liveris Academy, as it scales to create leaders of the future.

The Liveris Academy offers many opportunities to collaborate with UQ. From 2020, the Academy will welcome distinguished leaders to the UQ St Lucia campus as part of the Academy’s prestigious Leaders-in-Residence and mentoring programs.
