Joshua Newnes

Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)/Master of Engineering
Vice-Chancellor's Scholar

Josh is currently studying an integrated Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and Master of Engineering degree with a specialisation in electrical engineering. Inspired by the potential for technology to improve healthcare, he is focussed on the intersection of electrical, biomedical, and communications engineering.

He graduated from The Gap State High School as dux in 2023, receiving the top results in the state for Mathematical Methods, alongside a strong interest in Chemistry and Physics. He achieved a Vice-Chancellor’s scholarship at UQ and a Distinguished Academic Achiever award from QCE, recognising high achievement across a diverse range of learning options.

At university, he has participated in an electrical engineering study tour to Taiwan with a focus on the semiconductor industry and the local culture. He has also been involved with UQ Space and the Leaders at EAIT Pathway program. Hoping to participate in a semester-long exchange to CentraleSupélec, he is currently learning French, both in his spare time and at university.

Beyond his studies, Josh particularly likes orienteering; he enjoys volunteering to help organise club events and has represented the state in the national schools championships. He also loves to play board games with friends and is a keen cook. Through the Liveris Academy, Josh is grateful for the opportunity to develop the leadership and interdisciplinary skills required to solve complex global challenges within an increasingly interconnected society, and is looking forward to learning with his fellow students.
