Jasper Chong

Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) / Mathematics
Dalio Philanthropies Scholarship (2025)

Jasper began his studies at UQ in 2024, undertaking a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and Mathematics, with a focus on software engineering and statistics. This was chosen to further his interests in the fields of statistics and computer programming.

In 2023 Jasper graduated from St Peters Lutheran College with an ATAR of 99.70, achieving 100/100 in both Mathematical Methods and Specialist Mathematics subjects.

During his time at UQ, Jasper has maintained a GPA of 7, while holding various leadership and technical roles.
Notably, he has been fortunate to work as an AI and Backend developer at a cybersecurity company since first year, completed a UQ summer research project on AI image model interpretability, and be the Treasurer and now Vice President of the UQ Mathematics Student Society.

Most recently, he completed a 3 month internship with CSIRO working on investigating new methods for black hole imaging. He has continued to work with this group on developing novel architectures for machine learning based deep space imaging methods.

Outside of his studies, Jasper enjoys fitness, wildlife photography, reading, and computer programming.

In future, he hopes to apply his skills in statistics and machine learning to work towards solutions for “wicked problems”. He is working towards this through honing skills in creating AI applications for specific tasks with high positive impact, and through building knowledge in AI safety research.

Jasper was extremely honoured to join the Liveris Academy, and to have the opportunity to develop and learn within it.
