Henry Wang, Bachelor of Biomedical Science/ Doctor of Medicine (Provisional Entry)
Liveris Academy - Vice-Chancellor's Scholarship Affiliate Scholar
During the 2025 winter break, I had the opportunity to travel to Shanghai for 4 weeks as part of UQ Ventures Startup AdVenture Program, interning at Transwarp Technology. A listed company on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, Transwarp is an enterprise level software company that specialises in big data infrastructure and AI-driven solutions. During my time there, I gained experience across both independent and collaborative work.
Highlights from my experiences include:
- Engaging in LLMOps training through specific and tailored prompts.
- Collaborating with the marketing division in the launch of a refined English version of the company website, tailored for international stakeholders.
- Creating specific user manuals for AI chat bots, focusing on supporting the study strategies for science students.
The requirements for this role went well outside my normal remit studying biomedical science. Hence, these roles challenged me to think beyond the knowledge I have gained from my degree, and I found that cultivating such abilities outside of my usual learning field has been invaluable in broadening my perspective and training my adaptability. Indeed, with an increased understanding of AI and its possibilities, I can more fully understand its potential implications on the field of biomedicine.
Outside of internship hours, I was able to explore Shanghai and its surrounds, which offering us a thrilling mix of history, culture and modernity. I was able to visit cultural landmarks from within the city, such as the Jingan Temple, as well as outside, like the ancient water town of Zhujiajiao. We made countless trips to the Bund and Nanjing Road, where we revelled in the iconic skyline of Shanghai. Of course, it would be remiss not to mention the culinary diversity on offer in Shanghai. From speciality restaurants serving their signature Xiaolongbao, to street food offering a quick bite and a taste into the sense of everyday life. Visiting the bustling areas as well as surrounding attractions of Shanghai revealed to me the thrill of modernity whilst in deepening my cultural appreciation of the city.
Overall, my experience in Shanghai broadened my technical knowledge, simultaneously enriching my cultural knowledge of the city. I will also cherish the memories made with my fellow adventurers on the trip. From 6v6 futsal and indoor baseball at a sports bar, to braving the jam-packed peak hour metros, and even the small things like group conversations, it was ultimately these experiences and life-long connections forged from the trip that made this experience truly special.
I extend my gratitude to the team at UQ Ventures for the meticulous planning and steadfast support on this trip, and to the UQ Liveris Academy for introducing me to such an amazing opportunity. The Startup Adventures are truly transformative and memorable, and I would highly recommend them to any UQ student who is passionate about global innovation, entrepreneurship and cross-cultural learning.
