Joshua Ryu

Bachelor of Science / Doctor of Medicine (Provisional Entry)                                                                            Liveris Academy Undergraduate Scholar

Joshua has been accepted into the Provisional Entry pathway for the Doctor of Medicine program at UQ and is currently studying a Bachelor of Science to explore various opportunities in interesting STEM fields.

Joshua graduated from Brisbane State High School in 2023 with an ATAR of 99.80, after studying 7 subjects in school and achieving a 99/100 in five subjects. During senior, he also studied a university chemistry course and received a perfect GPA of 7. As a result of his extensive academic endeavours, Joshua was the recipient of the 2023 QCE Outstanding Academic Achiever and Distinguished Academic Achiever Awards, placing him at the top of 53,181 year 12 graduates in Queensland.

Throughout high school, Joshua was active in various leadership roles, including being a Student Representative Council leader, a STEM Ambassador for UQ, and a corporal in the Australian Air Force Cadets. The experiences from working in these diverse domains taught him to communicate effectively and synergise within teams, skills which led him to engage in group-based biomedical research at the Translational Research Institute (TRI). Consequently, his multidisciplinary involvement within and outside of school was recognised through the Peter Doherty Award for Outstanding Senior STEM Student, in honour of UQ alumnus and Nobel Laureate Professor, Peter Doherty.

Outside of his studies, Joshua has a passion for teaching younger students, composing and playing musical instruments, reading self-development books, and exercising and playing sports. In the future, he aims to globalise equitable healthcare by adapting and integrating emerging technologies into the medical sector. Eventually, his vision is to serve on medical missionaries, and hopes to come up with innovative solutions to provide more accessible healthcare in developing nations.

Joshua is honoured to join the Liveris Academy and is looking forward to the opportunities for growth and learning within the Academy and in university.
