Bachelor of Advanced Science (Honours)
YAP Scholar
Gemma is studying a Bachelor of Advanced Science (Honours) with a double major in genetics and biochemistry and molecular biology. As a 2021 graduate of Pittsworth State High School, Gemma was awarded DUX, valedictorian, the ADF Future Innovators Award in STEM and five subject awards. Gemma is also a UQ Young Achievers Program scholar and student mentor which has helped her to promote her leadership capabilities, community involvement and collaboration skills. By volunteering and helping others, Gemma hopes to bring her leadership abilities to work as a team with those in the Liveris Academy to create a sustainable future.
Growing up three hours west of Brisbane on a cattle and grain farm cultivated Gemma’s interest in genetics and biochemistry and molecular biology. Witnessing her parents endure many years of drought without successful crops or feed for their cattle has strengthened Gemma’s resolve to help those in need and work towards a sustainable future.
Gemma is interested in utilising her degree to investigate the cause and impact of genetic diseases, such as cancer, using knowledge from both her biochemistry and genetics major. By collaborating with the Liveris Academy, Gemma is looking forward to working with a team dedicated to sustainability and helping those around the world.
