Gemma Cronin

Bachelor of Advanced Science (Honours)
YAP Scholar

Gemma is studying a Bachelor of Advanced Science (Honours) and is majoring in genetics and biochemistry and molecular biology. As a 2021 graduate of Pittsworth State High School, Gemma was awarded DUX, valedictorian, the ADF Future Innovators Award in STEM and five subject awards. Gemma is also a member of the UQ Young Achievers Program which has helped her to promote her leadership capabilities in her community. By volunteering and helping others, Gemma hopes to bring her leadership abilities to work as a team with those in the Liveris Academy to create a sustainable future.

Growing up nearly three hours west of Brisbane on a cattle and grain farm, Gemma’s interest in genetics was cultivated from the breeding of cattle and the ability of crops to withstand harsh weather conditions. Witnessing her parents endure many years of drought without successful crops or feed for cattle has strengthened Gemma’s resolve to help those in need and work towards a sustainable future.

Gemma is interested in utilising her degree to determine the cause of genetic diseases with the hope of preventing these diseases in both agriculture and the human population using knowledge from both her biochemistry and genetics major. By collaborating with the Liveris Academy, Gemma is looking forward to working with a team dedicated to sustainability and helping those around the world.
