Jesse Woods

Liveris Academy Graduate

Jesse is currently a student at the University of Cambridge, studying his Master of Advanced Studies in Mathematics (Theoretical Physics). He is the 2023 recipient of the Cambridge Australia Allen Scholarship.

Jesse graduated from the UQ Bachelor of Science (Honours) program in 2023, majoring in Physics. He completed his thesis in “Irrelevant Deformations of Supersymmetric Quantum Field Theories and the Design of Tensor Computer Algebra Software”. He also graduated in 2022 with a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Mathematics, majoring in Physics and Pure Mathematics respectively.

He was a recipient of the Vice- Chancellor's Academic Scholarship. Jesse was also the recipient of the 2nd and 3rd Year Physics Prize, given to the top student of the respective cohorts each year. At the end of 2022, he received the Duncan McNaughton Prize, awarded to the top student in the Faculty of Science, to pursue Honours. He also completed an internship at CERN in 2022.

He hopes to pursue a research career in theoretical physics, contributing towards the development of a Grand Unified Theory of physics, and to develop new cutting-edge mathematical tools that are needed to study exotic particle spectra with important applications in nuclear theory and quantum computing. He is also interested in how these same techniques can be translated to tackle homologous problems, including complex biological systems and financial markets.

Originally from the Sunshine Coast, he graduated in 2017 with an OP1 and the dux of his school.

Jesse was heavily involved with the Faculty of Science in his time at the University of Queensland. He has been a Science Leader since 2019, and in 2021 received the Science Leader's Award for service to the faculty. Jesse was also the Sports Officer for the Student Association of Science Societies (SASS) from 2021-2022, and the President of PAIN UQ Physics Club in 2022.

He was also an Academic Tutor for the university between 2019-2023 and is passionate about communicating complex topics in an exciting way.

Outside of study he competes in powerlifting at an international level and enjoys other sporting endeavours, as well as nature photography.
