Joshua Ryu

Bachelor of Science / Doctor of Medicine (Provisional Entry)                                                                            Liveris Academy Undergraduate Scholar

Joshua is studying a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Science and Computer Science to explore exciting opportunities in various STEM fields and has received Provisional Entry into the Doctor of Medicine program at UQ.

A 2023 Brisbane State High School graduate, he excelled academically, studying 7 subjects and attaining a perfect score in a university-level chemistry course. His achievements, alongside musical and extracurricular pursuits, earned him the 2023 QCE Outstanding Academic Achiever and Distinguished Academic Achiever Awards, placing him at the top of 53,181 Year 12 graduates in Queensland.

Throughout high school, Joshua was active in various leadership roles, including being a Student Representative Council leader and Junior School Captain, a STEM Ambassador for UQ and a corporal in the Australian Air Force Cadets. His experiences in diverse domains taught him effective communication skills and the ability to synergise within teams, which led him to his engage in biomedical research at the Translational Research Institute. His multidisciplinary involvement was also recognised through the Peter Doherty Award for Outstanding Senior STEM Student, in honour of UQ alumnus and Nobel Laureate Professor, Peter Doherty.

Joshua currently serves as an Undergraduate Representative on the UQ Academic Board, representing ~35,000 students. Furthermore, he is grateful to hold the position of Liveris Academy Student Events Coordinator, while being a UQ Science Leader simultaneously.

Outside of his studies, Joshua has passions in entrepreneurship, self-improvement and exercising. He emphasises the importance of education and hopes to help many high school students through a tutoring business he founded, and he hopes to globalise equitable healthcare in the future by adapting and integrating emerging technologies into the medical sector and serving on medical missionaries if he pursues medicine.

Joshua is honoured to be a Liveris Academy Scholar and is looking forward to learning within and contributing to the Liveris Academy, UQ and humanity at large.
